The Scottish claim might be more strongly made if the Scottish government were to push for the return of the Parthenon marbles - 'appropriated' by a Scot. A case of Pots calling Kettles?

This is a disgraceful episode in the history of the Lewis Chessmen. The Outer Hebrides economy relies heavily upon the tourist trade and such historical items would add interest to an area that would benefit greatly from the display of said items. Where they are presently would, more than likely, not suffer any downturn in the number of visitors if they were not displayed there and replicas were there as a replacement.

With regards to the 'hotheads' the Outer Hebrides have virtually no crime. Theft is highly unusual.

There is so many reasons for the return and yet few for them not to.

[...] Lewis Chessmen subject to metropolitan prejudice You have to admire the skill with which some people shoot themselves in the foot. I was pretty ambivalent on Scottish claims to the Lewis chessmen. I’m still not convinced, but it seems to be evidence for claims that national heritage policy is arranged for the benefit of London rather than the UK. I’m hoping it’s a few idiots sending these emails rather than an endemic attitude. [...]
