Swiss Committee on the Return of the Parthenon Marbles
Apr 19, 2014

The president of the Swiss Committee for the Return of the Parthenon Marbles, Professor Dusan Sidjanski, during the event titled “Europe and the Parthenon Marbles: a common cause,” stressed the need for return of the marbles to Greece.

In his speech, Dr. Sidjianski referred to the Swiss Committee’s concern for the legal claim of the return of the Parthenon Marbles, stressing that this is considered a European issue which needs to be resolved through dialogue between the European institutions as well as through informing the public and especially Britain.

Moreover, he stressed that the demand of the Parthenon Marbles’ return is a unique case which concerns the integrity of a symbolic monument that has been dismembered.

A similar event took place at the University of Geneva, where speakers referred to the specificity of the request concerning the return of the Marbles as well as to the ways of resolving cultural differences and the proposal of the Swiss Committee for a mutually acceptable solution to the issue was widely supported.

The event at Zurich University was attended by many scientists and archaeologists. On behalf of Greece, the Greek ambassador Charalambos Manessis was also present.

The events were organized in support of the Committee’s effort to broaden available information on the issue of the return of the Parthenon Marbles and to strengthen the cooperation and support of the Swiss-German speaking area.

The question of the return of the Parthenon Marbles is more than a European question; it is a world -wide question. It is a human issue with implications for all humankind. The issue raised here is whether objects,in this case cultural, that are seized by an imperialist power can be allowed to remain forever with that power or whether at some point in time the object should be returned to the rightful owners. The answer that is made to appear very difficult depends on the kind of world we seek to construct: a world in which relations between States as well as
between individuals are based not on power and force but on law an morality.

The question of the return of the Parthenon Marbles is more than a European question. It is a human question which has also European dimensions. The issue concerns all humanity. The answer to the question which is often presented as complicated depends on the kind of world we seek to establish. Do we want a world in which power and force reign or a world based on law and morality?
Concretely, should objects seized or taken by an imperialist agent remain in the imperialist country or be returned at some point to its rightful owners?
The position taken on the Parthenon Marbles would affect many
situations in which colonialist and imperialist powers have wrongfully seized artefacts from Africa,Asia and Latin America.

A world-wide issue should not be viewed in a Eurocentric manner and leave aside other similar matters. No doubt that each case has its own history and background but it would be unfortunate if the impression were given that this is a matter for Europeans only. There are several United Nations resolutions which have been ignored by a party but the issue remains on the international agenda.

I agree that it is very much a global question.

I think though, that in the case of the Marbles, as with some other cases, there is also the question of whether a global issue can be dealt with by the European system.

Although the case involves two separate countries, they are both members of the EU & of the Council of Europe, opening the way for possibilities that the European Parliament, the European Courts of Justice & the European Courts of Human Rights might potentially provide a route to a solution, in addition to the other channels that non-intra-EC cases would be able to invoke.

Whether at the end of the day this proves to help or not has yet to be seen though.
