The Elgin Marbles & Vyronas

Posted at 12:48 pm in Elgin Marbles

One of the municipalities of Athens is named Vyronas – after the English poet Byron. At the time of the removal of the marbles from the Parthenon by Lord Elgin, Byron was one of the first & most vocal opponents. This year the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles wrote to congratulate them on their celebration of this anniversary.

First of all we would like to congratulate you for the excellent idea to commemorate the
182nd anniversary of the death of Lord Byron on the 13th of April
and to send you our sincere and warmest wishes for a successful and memorable event. We would like to thank you for your encouragement and your support to continue our peaceful but determined campaign to have all the Parthenon sculptures re-united and finally displayed near the Parthenon from which they were so unjustly removed.

Eddie O’Hara. Member of the British Parliament
Chairman of Marbles Reunited – The Friends of the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles

Eleni Cubitt. Honorary Secretary
The British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles

Both organisations are British and both are dedicated to the reunification of all the sculptures of the Parthenon – the monument so beloved of Byron.
