A collection of paintings by D H Lawrence have gone on display, 70 years after being banned. At one point, they were inherited by a Greek hotelier in Mexico, who offered to sell them back to Britain in return for the Parthenon Marbles.

A collection of paintings went on display yesterday – more than 70 years after the images were banned – but there is no sell-by date on obscenity.

In June 1929 a squad of embarrassed policemen raided the Warren gallery in London, and seized 13 paintings by DH Lawrence. They were spared from being burned on condition that they were never exhibited in Britain again.

Marbles exhibition opens in London

A virtual exhibition, which shows how the Elgin Marbles would look if they were reunited, has opened in London.

Marbles Reunited shows those sculptures removed from Greece 200 years ago by Lord Elgin next to those which remained in Athens.

THE NEW ACROPOLIS MUSEUM IN ATHENS: DESIGN & ORIGINAL EXHIBITS FROM THE ACROPOLIS COLLECTION

Beginning on March 6, 2003, the Onassis Cultural Center will present The New Acropolis Museum, a multi-media exhibition on the new museum designed by Bernard Tschumi. The Museum is being built to house all the archaeological findings from the Acropolis, and it is expected that the building structure and the gallery for the Parthenon marbles will be completed in time for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The exhibition will include architectural drawings and renderings of the building, models, and examine the conservation technology that will be used in the Museum. Also included in the exhibition will be original finds from the Acropolis that will ultimately be housed in the Museum. The exhibition will remain on view until mid-April.

The New Acropolis Museum exhibition will give visitors an opportunity to sense the scale and proportions of the new building, and will include architectural models, designs, images, and a 3-D interactive walk-through of the building. In presenting Tschumi’s models and renderings, the exhibition shows how he created a building in harmony with the authentic Acropolis environment, which facilitates a direct relationship between the new institution’s exhibitions and the famous monuments from which they originate.

NEW YORK — The halves of a carving depicting an ancient Greek chariot race interlock on the gallery wall like parts of a jigsaw puzzle.

Nowadays, the surviving Parthenon Sculptures are split between different museums. A new exhibition aims to give an idea what some of the pieces would look like if they were united together once more.

Elgin Marbles make ‘virtual’ return

The return of the Elgin Marbles to Greece has been simulated in a virtual reality exhibition, showing how the Parthenon treasures would look if they went back to Athens.

The virtual exhibition was first presented to the UK during a recent visit by Greek culture minister Evangelos Venizelos.
