Marbles minister, Christos Zachopoulos, critical after suicide plunge
John Carr in AthensThe Greek official responsible for seeking the return of the Elgin Marbles from Britain was in a critical condition last night after an apparent suicide attempt triggered by a relationship with an archaeologist on his staff.
Christos Zachopoulos leapt from the balcony of his fourth-floor flat in Kolonaki, central Athens, hours after being forced to resign his post as general-secretary of the Ministry of Culture.
At the weekend Evi Tzekou, 40, from Delphi, was charged with complicity in Mr Zachopoulos’s attempt to take his life. She admitted that the two had been having an affair, but denied persistent media reports that she intended to blackmail her former boss by making public a video of them having sex.Several television stations and the Sunday newspaper Thema said that they had received copies of such video material from Ms Tzekou.
According to media reports, her contract was due to expire at the end of the month and Mr Zachopoulos refused to renew it.
