Published: 11/06/2009STAFF in a Moray charity shop have discovered a book about the Elgin Marbles among donated titles.
Cancer Research UK volunteer John Mackintosh has learned that the hardback, called Parthenon – The Elgin Marbles, can be bought online at Biblio.com for £122.
The 62-year-old said he is confident of a good sale. “I want to get the best price and want to give Elgin folk the chance to buy it,” he said.Published in 1989 by the National Mortgage Bank of Greece, the book features 30 full-page reproductions of drawings and exact measurements of the Parthenon of Athens by artists James Stuart and Nicholas Revett.
The book’s introduction is written by George Anomeritis, the bank’s governor.
Mr Anomeritis writes about the “self-pride mingled with sadness” that he feels when visiting museums abroad.
The Elgin Marbles are a collection of classical Greek marble sculptures, inscriptions and architecture that originally adorned the Parthenon and other buildings on the Acropolis of Athens.
Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1799–1803, was responsible for removing pieces.
Anyone interested in buying the book should submit a bid in a sealed envelope to the Cancer Research UK charity shop at 38 High Street, Elgin, by 4pm on June 20.
