(Media-Newswire.com) – Making his first trip to the UK since the New Acropolis Museum opened in 2009, Professor Pandermalis will discuss building the new museum, which took over 30 years to plan, nine years to build and cost around 129 million Euros.
The lecture, entitled: ‘The New Acropolis Museum: Project and Realisation’, takes place on Friday 23 September and forms part of a conference where architects, critics, academics, curators and conservators from museums throughout Europe will discuss the principles and practicalities of displaying Classical antiquities in the 21st century. The New Acropolis Museum contains artefacts from the Acropolis in Athens, one of the most iconic sites of the ancient world and a symbol of ancient democracy and power. Built in the shadow of the Acropolis rock, the museum is a modern counterpart to the ancient Acropolis designed to imaginatively and sympathetically display the ancient objects. The highlight of the new museum is the sculpture which once decorated the 5th century BC Parthenon.
Many of the participants have recently worked on re-displays themselves and have encountered the diverse issues inherent in presenting the past through museum displays. This day will provide a rare opportunity to bring them together and to stimulate debate and exchange of ideas. The conference will particularly showcase the Fitzwilliam’s own Greek and Roman gallery, which re-opened in 2010. This new display is the culmination of an AHRC-funded collaborative project between members of the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Cambridge Faculty of Classics designed to enhance the display of Greek and Roman antiquities.
‘The Past on Display’ conference and the Severis lecture, ‘The New Acropolis Museum: Project and Realization’ by Professor Pandermalis, will take place on Friday 23rd September 2011. For further details and to register visit: http://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/dept/ant/
